Selection of tolerant soybean lines to soybean rust caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd. has been conducted. Relative yielding ability of F6 generation soybean lines obtained from crosses Cheiangmai60 * KUSL20004, Sukothail * OCB, Sukothail * KUSL20004 and Cheingmai60 * SJ.5 were evaluated under severe epidemic of soybean rust in 1992. The result indicated that there were 24 lines that exhibited yield over 300 kg/rai. Line 3501-3-2-1 exhibited the greatest yield of 402 kg/rai. The second ranked was line 3501-10-1-4 which yielded 386 kg/rai. Relative yielding ability under free - rusted of 24 selected F7 generation soybean lines were evaluated in dry season of 1993. The result stated that yield of 24 lines under free-rusted was higher than yield under severe rust epidemic. The calculation of tolerant index indicated that line 3502-124-5-1 exhibited the highest value of 0.97. The second ranked was line 3501-10-1-4 which tolerant index was 0.95. The tolerance components of soybean rust were investigated on 6 selected soybean lines by using detached leaf in the laboratory. The result indicated that line 3501-10-1-4 exhibited show rusting, the longest latent period of 16.4 days after inoculation, the lowest number of sorus, 4.3, per cm ** (2), the number of uredospore production was 850 spore/sorus and it also exhibited the longest penetration period of 6 days after inoculation. The result suggested that line 3501-10-1-4 was the most tolerance to soybean rust and the use of this tolerance line might be effective to reduce rate of epidemic.
