Influence of timing and positioning of leaf cutting on the growth and yield of lowland rice

Study of influence of timing and positioning of leaf cutting on growth and yield of lowland rice was done at TIATC, Japan during April to October, 1991. The varieties used were Amber Bar (Indica type) and Kinuhikari (Japonica type), were treated by leaf cutting at 20 and 30 cm of culm lenght from soil level after transplanting 30, 40 and 50 days. The results founded that only number of productive tiller was effected by positioning of leaf cutting but leaf number/culm, leaf area index and culm lenght were effected by timing of leaf cutting. And there are almost of all characters between varieties were different except leaf number/culm. Unfortunately, the Amber Bar was affected by natural disaster and was not able to harvest due to the badly lodging. Thus, Kinuhikari was studied on yield components and it resull show that the timing of lealcutting effecton dry weight of top part, spikelet number/panicle and yield/unit area; no cutting gave highest yield and following by leaf cutting at 30, 40 and 50 days after transplanting
