Insect population on peanut planted on tillage and no-tillage preparation

Experiment was carried out at farmer's field, Ban Muang, Khon Kaen. Pair comparison design was used on tillage and no tillage preparation. Plot size was 20x20 m each. Peanut variety Khon Kaen 60-3 was planted on December 27, 1990 in the paddy field with no tillage preparation and rice stalks were cut at the height of 30 cm high. The other plot, peanut with the same variety was planted on the paddy field with normal practice. The soil was ploughed and rice stalk was cut down and tilled over. The plant spacing was 50x20 cm. Fertilizer was appliied at the rate of 19-56-38 kg/ha. Irrigation was applied when soil moisture content was low. Rat6ngs were done weekly when the crop was 30 to 87 days old. During the growing season, insect population was very low. There was no leaf miner. The number of leaf damage per 40 plants caused by defoliators, leafhopper and thrips from the no-tillage plot were 121, 44 and 140 respectively whereas the number of leaf damages from the tillage plot caused by defoliators, leafhopper and thrips were 83, 25 and 256 respectively. Pod yield from no tillage plot was 1160 kglha while that of tillage plot was 800 kg/ha. The differende of pod yield may be the root rot disease which infected the crop of tillage plot more than that of no-tillage one. Pod damage caused by soil insects was 12.60 % in the no-tillage plot compared to 23.30 % in the tillage one. Since the insect population was low the comparison on the effect of tillage and no-tillage on insect damage can not be concluded.
