Esterases activity and Paraoxon toxicity in rat

The present study demonstrated that use of Paraoxon has resulted in significant inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) and carboxylesterase (CarbE). Prolonged administration of paraoxon led to increase of inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) but not of carboxylesterase (CarbE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) activity. In 20-day treated rats, carboxylesterase (CarbE) activity recovered to some extent confirming to the contribution of carboxylesterase (CarbE) to detoxication and to the development of the tolerance. Among the diverse biochemical reactions involved in detoxication of organophosphorus compounds, carboxylesterase (CarbE) performs the role of a high affinity-low capacity detoxication process.
