After short survey of the events connected with the production of l-lysine in Yugoslavia and the construction of the factory for feed-grade lysine concentrate "Bioferm" in Zitiste (Yugoslavia), starting with the purchase of licence in 1978 and transferring of microorganisms - lysine producers in 1983, short description of the purchased thechnology and of its further development in Yugoslavia are given. Biosynthesis of l-lysine by Brevibacterium bacteria is described, characteristics of feed-grade lysine concentrate as product are shown, and basic results of own investigations with the aim of obtaining of crystalline lysine with high-grade purity, emphasizing media modification and downstream processes for recovery and purification of fermentation products are discussed. New scheme of utilization of waste streams from crystalline lysine production is developed, in which these waste streams are incorporated into feed-grade lysine concentrate production, enabling the practically waste-free production, i.e., production without any wastes which could be an ecological problem
