The terpene compositions of volatile oils obtained by steam distillation from the whole plants of the wild-growing Mentha piperita collected from a wider native range of Serbia (Yugoslavia) and other specimens from the culture regions of Russia. The quality of the investigated plants, regarding the essential oils content is better than that specified by the Pharmacopoeia (3.3-3.9 compared to 3.0). However, the menthol, menthil acetate and menthone content in the obtained essential oils is lower than the Pharmacopoeia requirement. It seems that only fresh plant material collected from the Kragujevac region (Yugoslavia) and Simferopolska 200 from the Moscow region (Russia) possess the values of the Pharmacopoeia demands. The terpene compositions were analysed by gas chromatography, and the methol and its acetate were confirmed as predominant constituents (44.00-75.95 and 6-21, respectively)
