Photomorphogenic responses in plant species of upland grasslands in Serbia [Yugoslavia]. [A short version of doctoral dissertation]

The kinetics of photomorphogenic responses of five grassland species in both (1) seed germination under the conditions red light and (2) seedling growth under the modulated Pfr/Ptot (Pfr - far red absorbing form of phytochrome, Ptot - phytochrome) at the EOD (end of day treatments) were used for determination of growth strategies in established plants in relation to regenerative strategies. Agrostis capillaris and Festuca rubra, edificators in grasslands, exhibit their competitive ability for light by stem elongation. The upland form of Trifolium repens in simulated shade, only in short period in the beginning, reacts by stolon elongation. Rumex acetosa and Achillea millefolium, rosette species, are competitors in low plant canopy benefiting from the strategy of vertical area colonization. These rosette species partially compensate their sensitivity by stimulation of seed germination in light, as Agristis capillaris does
