The need to increase crop production involves either expanding the land areas used for cropping or improving the productivity of present farm land. Crop production is feasible in the semi-arid areas either by the choice of crops, or by the modification of the limiting factors. Soils of the semi-arid areas are low in nitrogen and phosphorus and crops show difficiency symptoms. Moisture dificit mainly limits crop production and response to fertilizer application is higher when combined with measures to conserve soil moisture. Crop residues and intercropping of cereals with legumes of better nitrogen fixing capacity has improved yields of the associated cerals.
