In the sub-humid mixed farming system of Western Ethiopia, the importance of crop residues as animal feed and fuel wood is high. Grain to total residue (TR), residue with out cob (RWOC), and residue components (stalk, husk, leaf, cob) relationships were assessed for local genotypes, an improved open pollinated variety (Beletech) and two hybrid genotypes (BH-140 and BH-660) of maize using a respective number of 257, 31, 31 and 31 samples of 10 square metre each from research centre's and farmers' production fields. Relationship of straw to grain yield in tef was also studied on 95 samples of tef collected from farmers fields over a 3 year period. In maize, dry matter (DM) grain and residue yield differences between local and the other genotypes, and among the improved genotypes were significant (P0.01). The relationships of grain yield (GY) with cob, RWOC and TR for the local variety were linear and significant (P0.01). In the local genotype, plant population per unit area was an important source of variation in the relationship with RWOC, TR, but not with cob yield. over all, in the local variety GY and plant population accounted for 43, 48 and 33 of the variation in RWOC, TR, and cob respectively. for Beletech, with the exception of cob which was found to have quadratic relationship, all relationship of GY with total and components of residue yield were significant (P0.01-0.05) and linear. for BH -660 also, with the exeption of leaf which has shown non significant relationship (P0.05), and with the exception of husk which has got quadratic relationship (P0.05), the relationships of GY with TR and components of residue yield were linear and significant (P0.001-0.05). The variabilities in total and components of residue accounted by GY were very low for BH 660 (R square
