Effect of organic and mineral fertilizers on the intensity of triticum leaf blight

The effects of farm yard manure (FYM) and nitrogen and phosphorus rats (N/P) on the intensity and frequency of turcicum leaf blight (TLB) caused by exserohilum turcicum was studied on an open pollinated maize variety Beletech for two years (1994 and 1995) at Bako. The experimental design was complete block design, in an incomplete factorial arrangement and two checks in three replicationsResults indicate that incidence was low (26.4) at 20/46 kg/ha NP2O5). Besides, many lesions and more number of leaves were infected in non-fertilized plots. The relationship between incidence and yield at 0/0 kg/ha N/P2O5 and severity and yield at 20/46 kg/ha N/P2O5 when combined with the different levels of FYM were r=0.975 and r=0.978, respectively and were highly significant. When incidence of TLB was below 30, yield of maize was found to be over 43 q/ha-1. Whereas over 53 q/ha maize grain yield was obtained when TLB severity was less than 10, but as severity of the disease increased to over 18 the amount of yield decreased to about 25. The effect of FYM and N/P rates on maize grain yield were highly significant. But there was no significant differences observed due to the interaction between FYM by N/P.Therefore, optimum rate of fertilization by both organic and inorganic fertilizers could chance the vigor of maize plant and result in the increased tolerance or escape from diseases, better nutrition status, good soil structure and improved pH. thus the results in the present experiment indicated that fertilization by FYM and N/P at optimum levels is one control option against TLB that could bring sustained high maize yield.
