On-farm evaluation of two high-efficacy grass herbicides for bread wheat production in Ethiopia

Severl weed control treatments were evaluated on peasant farmers' wheat fields in Arsi Region of Ethiopia during 1995 and 1996. Two high-efficacy grass herbicides, fenoxaprop-P-ethyl and clodinafob (the active ingredients in Puna Super and Topik, respectively), were tested at half and full manufacturer's, recommended rates, and in combination with 2,4-D or hand weeding for broadleaf weed control. The results from 12 trials indicated that there was no detrimental effect of using half the recommended manufacturers' product rate (i.e.,0.5 instead of 1.0 1 ha-1) of either grass herbicide, in terms of grass weed control or wheat grain yield. Regardless of product rate, a significant negative interaction was observed between grass herbicide and broadleaf weed control method: the sequential application of 2,4-D followed by Topik, with intervening time periods ranging from one is five days, deterimentally affected grass weed control and wheat grain yield. Thus, the extension services in Ethiopia should advise wheat growers: 1) to apply the high-cost, high efficacy grass herbicides Puma Super or Topik at the reduced product rate of 0.5 1 ha-1, and 2) to avoid application of Topik of Fields preciously treated with 2,4-D for broadleaf weed control.
