Humus, its collodial properties on soils around Ghinchi and Holetta

The chemical composition of humus and its main characteristic belong to natural collodial system represented in soil by two forms: active (peptizable) and passive (non peptizable). The humus content and its collodial properties of soil samples collected from two major sites of the central highland regions of Ethiopia was investigated. The objective of the study was to find out the influence of cultivation on the qualitative change of humus content (collodial properties) of Vertisol and Nitosol at Ghinchi and Holetta, respectively. The study conducted included a general physical and chemical characterization of the soil at these locations. The major study being humus, profile analysis of passive humus, active humeus, mobile organic substances and humus reactive index was conducted. The result of the study at both locations (Ghinchi and Holetta) indicated that the form of humus content (percent) decreased with depth due to intensive farming. Cultivation has altered the form of humus and its collodial properties when compared with that of uncultivated soil. This lead a considerable decline of organic matter in the upper arable layer.
