Effect of inter-row cultivations on boll retention and yield of upland cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.)

Inorder to determine the optimum number of inter-row cultivations for irrigated cotton, a study consisting of four cultivation treatments was conducted at Melka Werer Research Center from 1989 to 1991. The treatments were one cultivation at 20 days after sowing (DAS) (C1); two cultivations at 20 and 41 DAS (C2); three cultivations at 20, 41 and 55 DAS (C3); and four cultivations at 20, 41, 55 and 69 DAS (C4). On average, seed cotton yield was reduced by 216 and 500 kg ha-1 when three and four inter-row cultivations, respectively, were carried out compared to C1. Thus, two inter-row cultivations at 20 and 41 DAS (C2) could be enough without incurring any yield loss. At stages later than 41 DAS, the plants had already attained a high canopy coverage and produced enough fruiting forms which were liable to mechanical damage caused by later inter-row cultivations.
