Based on the tremendour importance of zera-zera sorghum and fear of the genetic erosion of these mateials, the Internationalboard for Plant Genetic Resource Advisory Committee on Sorghum and millet had made a special recommendation for an intensive collection of zera-zera sorghum in the Sudano-Ethiopian boarder. Accordingly in 1981 a pointed collection meission has been organized by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid tropics (ICRISAT) incollaboration with Ethiopian Sorghum Improvement Project (ESIP) and Plant genetic Resource Center/Ethiopia (PGRC/E). By this mission several zera-zera sorghum landraces were collected which could be added to the existing small number of zera-zera sorghum in the world collection and to conserve, characterize and utilize in Ethiopia as well. From these materials 58 landraces and 6 checks have been studied in 8 x 8 simple lattice design to investigate the variability that exists in morpho-agronomic characters (i.e. phenological, leaf, stem head and seed character as well as yield). The study was conducted as three Institute of Agricultural Research Centers, namely; Jima, Bako and Melkassa. In this study wide range of variability has been observed among the germplasms for morpho-agronomic characters studied, namely: days to flower, days to mature, leaf characters (leaf width, leaf length and leaf area), stem characters (internode length, stalk diameter and plant height), seed weight, number of seeds per head, yield per plant and per plot.
