The variation of wheat cultivars in terms of phytotechnical performance, physico-chemical composition, and MEn-content with emphasis on the bio-efficacy of carbo(NSP) [non-starch polysaccharides] enzymes

Eleven varieties of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), grown in Belgium under identical environmental conditions, were assessed on the basis of phytotechnical performance, physico-chemical characteristics and metabolisable energy, included the response to carbo(Non-Starch Polysaccharides)enzymes, for broiler chicks. The 1996-growing season was characterized by ideal climatic conditions with as a result a disease load within the normal range, a high grain yield and relatively high values for hectoliter weight and kernel weight. The variation for most nutrients was within the normal range with averages of e.g. 8.9/ for total NSP and 5.0/ for total arabinoxylans. Grain yield was either positively or negatively correlated with starch or protein, respectively. The average MEn (metabolisable energy)-value of wheat was 11.7 MJ/kg with a range of 8.9/. The addition of enzymes resulted in average MEn-increase of 5.0/ (1.0-11.5): this /-increase was inversely related to the MEn-value. The average MEn equivalency of the enzyme preparation was 580 MJ/kg (108-1312). There was a tendency for a negative correlation between the bio-efficacy of enzymes and the arabinose/xylose-ratio of the arabinoxylans. There were also 2 significant side-effects of enzymes in terms of a reduced excreta/feed-ratio and an enhanced N-retention.
