Purpose of the on hand studies was a comparative characterization of resistance-reaction of traditionally breeded and transgenic sugar beet to rhizomania. The tests were carried out with young plantlets, using cultivation and infestation-technique under standardized and optimized conditions. The determination of virus content as the define characteristic of resistance was determined by means of ELISA, in addition of the registration of yield and quality data in field trials. The level of infestation and the variance in the specific characteristic "virus content" of transgenic sugar beets is comparable or even superior to traditionally breeded rhizomania-resistant varieties. This is especially shown by very high infestation pressure and is confirmed by a comparative evaluation of yield and quality data of field trials.
