Satellite rainfall estimation and its applications in Ethiopia
1998
Dinku, T. (National Meteorological Services Agency, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia))
We have received half-hourly digital data from the European Meteorological Satellite (Meteosat) since 1990. The data are used, among other things, for estimating ten-day total rainfall using the TAMSAT methodology developed at the university of Reading, UK. Though suitable for operational use, the methodology has got some limitations when applied to Ethiopia. During the last three years we have tried to adapt this methodology to the Ethiopian weather/topographic conditions and come up with better rainfall estimates. The results, though far from being perfect, are encouraging. The estimate was found to be a good supplement to the very sparse surface rain gauge network. There are already some operational applications, the main one being drought early warning. The research is still in progress and there is still room for further improvement.
