Some aspects of climate variability and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa
1998
Gommes, R. (FAO, Rome (Italy). Agrometeorology Group)
This paper focuses on some links between food security and climate variability in sub-Saharan Africa, essentially rainfall variability. As climate potentially affects the food chain from production to consumption, the different steps are succinctly described. Trends, seasonality and persistence are among the climate characteristics which display a most direct effect on food availability. More complex interactions are also examined, in particular situations where civil war (Rwanda), and demography and soil features amplify climate variability. An agroclimatic risk analysis is given for the production of cereals in Niger.
