The nutritive values of silages, prepared in 1996 and 1997, were not significantly different. In 1997 the crude protein, crude fibre and butyric acid content in dry matter was 12.4 per cent, 30.2 per cent and 0.2 per cent, respectively. The content of ME was 8.9 MJ and that of digestible protein 72g per 1 kg DM. In both years the protein content of the silages was low and the crude fibre content quite high. 44.4 per cent of trench silages in 1996 and 45.0 per cent in 1997 were evaluated not satisfactory due to their low protein content. In DM the crude fibre content was above 30 per cent in 45.6 per cent of silage samples analysed in 1996 and in 1997 it was even 57.5 per cent. In both years the content of crude protein and crude fibre was satisfactory only in 1/10 of the silages. The high proportion of fibre fractions and the low crude protein content refer to the fact that almost half of the silages in Estonia were prepared in the period when the best harvest time of grass had passed
