Variety test of malting barley
1998
Russi, N. (Estonian Agricultural University, Tartu (Estonia). Dept. of Field Crop Husbandry)
Barley varieties were tested for three years against standard variety 'Elo'. After cleaning, weighing and measuring the water content, the quality of the barley varieties was assessed. The grading of the barley was measured and the samples were calibrated. Only the fraction above 2,5 mm was used for the further analysis. Thousand kernel weight, protein content and germination energy were measured. The results can be concluded, that besides in Europe well-known malting barley cultivar 'Alexis', cultivar 'Elo' can be used for malt production due to its yield and quality parameters. As preliminary results show, attention should be paid to 'Anni' and 'Inari'. But these cultivars should be investigated more thoroughly, to determine extractiveness and beta-Glucane content in wort
