During experiments in the early 1950's Pleurotus eryngii was successfully grown in Hungary. On beech logs, oyster mushroom was first grown by Erno Toth. Then, together with Ede Vessey, he studied the production issues of various mushroom species, and performed a succesfull attempt to grow shiitake. In 1970, the two Hungarian researches presented the method of growing oyster mushroom on sterilised corn-cob, awarded by a gold medal.
