[Influence of soil mulching with sawdust and transparent polyethylene on growth and yield of Okra and weed control]

Three field experiments were conducted during 1990, 91 and 92 at Mujahed farm in Lahej govermorate, Yemen to investigate the effectiveness of pre-planting mulching of moist soils with sawdust and transparent polyethylene films (solarization) for seven weeks during the hot season. Randomized block design with three replications were used for each treatment. Results obtained suggested that polyethylene cover was superior as that ammonium (NH4-N) and nitrate (NO3-N) nitrogen and available phosphorous (P2O5) and potassium (K) content in solarized soil were increased. Weeds dry weight was decreased by 97.1, 81.4 and 68.8 percent respectively in three years, as compared with the control, thus, this method led to good weed control and yield was increased up to 63.9, 45.0 and 33.7 over control, respectively, in the three years. Mulching with Sawdust increased soil content of ammonium and nitrate nitrogen only and reduced the weed dry weight by 40.8, 23.2 and 32.6 percent, respectively, in the three years. Data obtained indicated that polyethylene mulching gave better result than Sawdust.
