[In vitro methods of seed breeding of sweet and sour cherries]
1998
Stanys, V. | Staniene, G. (Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture, Babatai (Lithuania))
Seed germination of early season sweet and sour cherries is very low. Therefore, it is difficult to grow abundant families and breeding is not efficient. Plants of early varieties form viable embryos but seeds do not germinate because of poor cotyledon development during ripening. It is possible to increase the output of seedlings by in vitro methods. In trials autonomy of isolated embryos started to form in the 5th week after full flowering. The highest per cent of developing embryos in in vitro conditions was obtained when 6-9 weeks had passed after full flowering.
