The work is about the role of selenium in human and animal organisms as well as about the results of its deficiency. Selenium content in soils and its important biological functions are explained. The world areas deficient in selenium as well as those having toxic concentrations of this element are pointed out. The measures used in different countries to regulate and compensate selenium content in soil and food are discussed. Some measures are suggested for the solution of the selenium deficiency problem in Latvia.
