Seals and seal hunting in the East Baltic: a historical review

In the present paper the existing information on the role of seals in the life of the people in the East Baltic region is summarized. The importance of the Baltic Sea as a centre of seal hunting in Neolithic Europe and the Middle Ages is explained. The seal species inhabiting the East Baltic since the prehistoric times are described. Seal hunting history and the resulting decrease of seal population during this century are discussed. It is stated that since 1980ies due to the hunting ban the recovery of the grey seal population has begun.
