DNA from 18 strains of Pseudomonas solanacearum were analyzed using probes developed from a cosmid bank of PSO 1000, a Biovar 3 strain causing bacterial wilt of eggplant. The two Biovar 2 strains differed significantly from the Biovar 3 and 4 strains. Almost always, no DNA fragment from Biovar 2 hybridized with the probes used. If hybridization was present, hybridization occurred in different fragment size. Within the Biovar 3 strains, polymorphism was also evident. Biovar 4 strains were almost similar to the Biovar 3 strains. The probes that were developed may be useful in identifying and detecting field isolates of P. solanacearum
