Inventory and assessment of fish stock in coastal waters and mangrove areas of a mining site in Paracale, Camarines Norte [Philippines]

The inventory and stock assessment of fish in Paracale, Camarines Norte [Philippines] was done for the period January to June 1994. One hundred and two fish species from 41 families were classified. The estimated volume of fish landings from 15 fishermen in 1993 and 1994 was 476.10 and 818.44 kg, respectively. A total number of 60,437 and 57,527 from seven families, namely, Acanthuridae, Carangidae, Lutjanidae, Nemipteridae, Scombidae, Serranidae and Siganidae were caught in 1993 and 1994, respectively. The total average catch per month of 15 fishermen for 1993 and 1994 was 1,190.25 and 1,116, respectively. The average volume of fish catch per fisherman in mangrove areas was 14.5 and 57.6 for 1993 and 1994, respectively. About 4,584 and 9,330 samples from 5 families, namely, Centraoponidae, Leiognathidae, Mugilidae, Serranidae, and Siganidae, were caught in 1993 and 1994, respectively. The volume of fish catch per fisherman in shoreline areas was based on 925 and 4,058 samples from five families which were caught in 1993 and 1994, respectively. In 1993 and 1994, average volumes of 36.10 and 181.12 kg, respectively, were obtained. In the open seas, volume of fish catch per fisherman was based on 7,612 and 20,444 samples caught in 1993 and 1994, respectively, from 5 families, namely; Caringidae, Lutjanidae, Scombidae, Serranidae and Sphyraenidae. Average volume of 99.0 and 298.3 kg were obtained in 1993 and 1994, respectively. An increase in the monthly and daily catch per unit effort (CPUE) of a fisherman in three areas considered, namely, mangrove area, shoreline, and open seas, was observed for the period January to November 1994. The highest increase was observed in the open seas, followed by shoreline, and the mangrove area, in decreasing order
