Histological and bioaccumulation studies in selected organs of Tilapia nilotica after acute exposure to zinc
1994
Carino, V.S. | Casuay, A.A.
This study determined the histological changes and bioaccumulation in organs of adult Tilapia nilotica exposed to 36 ppm zinc at 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hrs. Gill lesions observed were epithelial lifting, lamellar fusion, hyperplastic interlamellar epithelium, and necrotic lamellae. Kidneys showed loosened connective tissues, dilated glomerular capillaries, hydropic degeneration, and necrotic renal epithelium. The liver manifested focal inflammation, cloudy swelling, dilated sinusoid, and central vein with necrotic endothelium. At 96 hrs., zinc content was highest in gillsliverkidneymuscles. Only liver bioaccumulated zinc. These results may be used as diagnostic indices for assessing fish health in polluted areas
