In order to investigate the presence and diffusion of Eimeria spp. in buffalo herds and the role played by pregnant/postpartum female buffaloes in Eimeria spp. epidemiology, two studies were carried out on buffalo breedings situated in the province of Caserta, in the northwest area of Campania Region (Southern Italy). During the first investigation 1,184 buffaloes from 130 breedings were examined: 390 calves, 396 yearlings/heifers and 398 adult buffaloes. Eimeria spp. was found in 86.1 percent of the farms tested; E. bareillyi, E. zuernii, E. bovis, E. auburnensis, E. ellipsoidalis, E. subpsherica and E. pellita were the most frequently revealed species. During the second investigation the feces of 80 pregnant/postpartum buffaloes were tested twice a month, from February to June, in order to detect Eimeria spp. oocysts. In this group, 76 buffaloes expelled a limited number of coccidia during the checked months and 32.4 percent of copromicroscopic examinations were positive. The largest number of positive buffaloes was found in March and April, while the largest number of parturitions took place in May and June
