Salim, M. (National Agricultural Research Centre, Islamabad (Pakistan))
Biocontrol agents include parasites, parasitoids, predators and pathogens. They are present and keep the population of insect pests in agroecosystems if they are not destroyed by indiscriminate use of insecticides or by inappropriate cultural practices etc. To conserve population of biocontrol agents measures may include, inventory of biocontrol agents; Studies on population dynamics, interspecific and interspecific competition, biology , ecology and field behavior of biocontrol agents; selective use of insecticides; Judicious use of insecticides; Avoidance of harmful cultural practices; Reduction of undesirable predators; Collecting biocontrol agents from fields where they are not needed and releasing them in other fields where they are needed; Collecting egg batches/masses and place them in containers in such a way that parasitoids can escape but not the insect pests.
