Influence of the plant species on the heavy metal contents in the crops grown in the area of lead-zinc Smelter-Plovdiv, Bulgaria

The Lead-Zinc Smelter near the town of Plovdiv is situated in an intensive agricultural region where different crops are grown - forages, tobacco, cereals, fruits, vegetables, orchards and vineyards. The main pollutants in the region are lead, zinc and cadmium. The character of the pollution is aerial, involving soluble forms of the metals, metal aerosols and metal particles. The highest content of the Cd, Pb and Zn is found in the tobacco leaves, less in the forages and grass, and lest in cereals, vegetables and fruits. The significant correlation between total content of Cd, Pb and Zn in soil and plants are observed for the forages but not for cereals, fruits and vegetables. Although the mobile form extracted by 1M NH4NO3 correspond to the heavy metal content especially in the forage crops, they depends markedly stronger on the total content than to the pH value in soils.
