Purpose of this experiment was to study the chromosome number and karyotype of W. miostoma, W. attu, W. dinema and K. bicirrhis from Thailand. Five specimens of each species of fish, 20.1-27.5 cm, 20.2-28.9 cm, 13.1-20.1 cm, 5.4-6.1 cm in their standard length were used respectively. Method of chromosome preparation was modified from Ida and Kyo (1980). Classification of chromosome followed Levan et al., (1964). The findings were as follows: (1) The diploid chromosome number of W. miostoma is 56. The karyotype comprises 13 pairs of metacentric, 2 pairs of submetacentric and 13 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes. The arm number is 86. (2) The diploid chromosome number of W. attu is 88. The karyotype comprises 8 pairs of metacentric, 1 pair of submetacentric, 2 pairs of subtelocentric and 33 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes. The arm number is 106. (3) The diploid chromosome number of W. dinema is 62. The karyotype comprises 10 pairs of metacentric, 5 pairs of submetacentric, 4 pairs of subtelocentric and 12 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes. The arm number is 92. (4) The diploid chromosome number of K. bicirrhis is 64. The karyotype comprises 10 pairs of metacentric, 5 pairs of submetacentric, 2 pairs of subtelocentric and 15 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes. The arm number is 94. The findings revealed that four fishes have not the same chromosome number. The arm number and the pattern of karyotypes are different. This study is useful for cytotaxomy and evolutionary relationship of fish.
