M3R3 progenies of the M2R2 rice plants survived from the destruction of yellow orange leaf virus were grown in the field under naturally long daylength in order to determine the photoperiod sensitivity of M3R3 proginies. The 129 M3R3 progenies were grown in plant to row at April 8, 1991. Each row consisted of 10 plants with one plant per hill at 33 X 25 cm spacing. Every 10 rows was planted alternately with one row of control of aromatic rice variety Khao Dawk Mali 105 (KDML 105). The number of days to 75 percent flowering, plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of panicles per plant and lodging were recorded as criteria for selection. All the M3R3 progenies were still photoperiod insensitive as in the M2R2 generation. They could flower under the condition of long daylength with the number of days to flowering varied from 78 days at the dose of 16 krad to 114.5 days at the dose of 32 krad. On the contrary the controls of KDML 105 were photoperiod sensitive. They flowered after September 1,1991 by the stimulation of short daylength. The plant height of the M3R3 progenies was shortest 152.2 cm at the dose of 12 krad and highest 169 cm at the dose of 20 krad. The number of tillers per plants was lowest 13.3 tillers/plant at the dose of 8 krad and highest 36.5 tillers/plant at the dose of 20 krad. The number of panicles per plant was lowest 9 panicles/plant at the dose of 8 krad and highest 27.1 panicles/plant at the dose of 16 krad. Lodging was lowest 1.8 at the dose of 20 krad and highest 7.2 at the dose of 4 krad. M3R3 progenies having short flowering date, short plant height, good tillering, high panicle bearing and nonlodging were selected. The 95 plants of M3R3 progenies were selected and will be grown as M4R4 progenies for further selection.
