Changes were examined in blood concentrations of insulin, glucose and anorganic phosphorus in healthy cows (n = 10) and ketotic cows (n = 10) following i.v. administration of glucose solution. In both healthy and ketotic cows, 30 and 60 minutes after administration (50%) of glucose solution (dose 500 mg/kg of body weight), the blood concentrations of glucose and insulin were increased. Significantly lower values of insulin in blood of ketotic cows in comparison with blood concentrations of insulin in healthy cows were established 30 and 60 minutes following i.v. application of glucose solution, which indicates that the ability of beta-cells of the endocrine pancreas to synthesize and release insulin is reduced in cows which are suffering from ketosis. Following i.v. applications of glucose solutions, it was established that concentrations of anorganic phosphorus were reduced in the blood of healthy and ketotic cows, and there was a significant decrease in the blood concentration of anorganic phosphorus in ketotic cows in comparison with healthy ones. The decreased concentration of anorganic phosphorus in cows is linked with the active entry of glucose into the glucolytic pathway of peripheral tissues, so that it can be concluded on the basis of these investigations that there is a more intense utilization of glucose from blood by peripheral tissues in ketotic cows.
