Effect of high levels of sodium selenite on activity of certain enzymes in blood plasma of chicks

There were determined the effect of the addition of high levels of sodium selenite (0, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 mg Se/kg feed) on the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in blood plasma of chicks during fattening. The addition of high levels of nonorganic selenium to chick feed did not lead to a linear increase in GSH-Px activity. In all groups, the highest levels of GSH-Px were on the 11th day (11.40-36.76 microkat/L). Already toward the end of the 2nd week, a significant drop was in enzyme activity in all groups (9.10-27.40 microkat/L). Activity was decreased in proportion with the duration of exposure. AST activity in chick plasma was almost equal in all groups (92.90-137.30 U/L) in certain time intervals. The only exceptions are groups 5 and 6, where significantly higher values were at the end of the 5th and 6th weeks of fattening (178.70-197.00 U/L). At the age of 11 days, ALT activity in all chick groups was at almost the same level (12.50-15.70 U/L), with exception of group 3, which showed higher activity (19.00 U/L). At the end of the 2nd week, enzyme activities in all groups almost doubled in comparison with the situation established on the 11th day (25.70-33.75 U/L). However, at the end of three weeks, there was a significant drop in ALT activity to values which were lower than those established on the 11th day (5.15-11.60 U/L). Enzyme activity was maintained at these levels throughout the fattening period.
