The objective of the study was to investigate the abundance of Azotobacter in the rhizosphere and on the root of four hybrid varieties of sugar beet (Hy-11, Dana, Delta and Norma). The seeds were inoculated with several strains of Azotobacter chroococcum (2, 3, 5, 8, 14, 2/1). The samples were taken on two different dates. On average, all the strains brought about a statistically significant increase in the number of the bacteria in relation to the uninoculated controls. In the rhizosphere, the greatest increase was achieved in Delta inoculated with strains 5 and 2/1. Strains 8 and 2/1 in Dana and strain 14 in Norma produced the highest number of the bacteria on the root.
