Occurrence of major field crops pests in the Vojvodina Province [Serbia, Yugoslavia] in 1998 and the forecast of occurrence in 1999

The forecasting of the degree of occurrence of some field crops pests in Vojvodina Province, Serbia (Yugoslavia) has been regularly reported since 1978. By unspection of soil samples from fields where cereals and sugar beet were grown in 1998, the following average number/square meter was recorded: 4.0 wireworms (Elateridae), 0.9 whitegrubs (Scarabaeidae), 0.61 caterpillars of Scotia spp. and 0.02 adults of Zabrus tenebrioides, 1.1. adults of Bothynoderes punctiventris and 0.06 chrysalides of Mamestra spp. Scrobipalpa ocellatella was found at all inspected sugar beet fields, on 39.3% of plants, with 0.5 larvae per plant. The number and injuri (about 0.5-5% of maize plants) of Ostrinia nubilalis decreased, as well as the injuries of Helicoverpa armigera. In the oposite, the new corn pest, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, continued further spreading, and caused more damage.
