The goal of tints paper was to investigate the ion-exchange properties of natural zeolite clinoptilolite (Zlatokop deposit, Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia, Yugoslavia), and its maximally exchanged cationic forms (potassium-clinoptilolite CL-K, and calcium clinoptilolite, CL-Ca), at 298K. Natural zeolite has a high affinity for potassium ions (0.168 molK/100g). Also, natural clinoptilolite, as well as CL-K amd CL-Ca have a very high effective ion-exchange capacities for toxic ammonium ions, and can be used in purification of wastewaters. A high affinity of clinoptilolite for ammonium ions is consequence of the diffusion through the zeolite channels without steric limitations and the ammonium ion binding by ionic and hydrogen bands with zeolite framework. The detected effective ion-exchange capacities are: 0.247 mol NH4+/100g of potassium-clinoptilolite, 0.214 mol NH4+/100g of natural clinoptilolite, and 0.222 mol NH4+/100g of calcium-clinoptilolite. The best ion exchanger is potassium clinoptilolite.
