A two factorial experiment of 20- and 50-cm inter-row spacing with 14 g and 7 g per row was conducted over two years in non-irrigated very deep clay soil. The highest sainfoin seed (pods) yield was achieved with plants grown in 20-cm spaced rows employing 100 kg seeds/ha (750.6 and 811.7 kg/ha in 1995 and 1996, respectively). Substantially lower yields were achieved with plants sown in wider spaced rows employing lower sowing rates. In 1995 and 1996, plants sown in 20-cm spaced rows yielded 687.4 and 761.0 kg seeds/ha, respectively. Optimal seed yields were recorded in 20-cm spaced rows using 100 kg seeds/ha, in both trial years (781.2 kg/ha). Less favourable yields were achieved at the rate of 200 kg seeds/ha (667.3 kg/ha). Plants in 50-cm spaced rows, yielded 405.5 and 461.3 kg seeds/ha in 1995 and 1996, respectively. Seeds obtained from plants grown on a larger vegetation area, i.e. in 50-cm spaced rows employing 40 kg seeds/ha had the greatest percentage germination.
