The author have succeeded in increasing sugar content in sugar beets inoculated with Azotobacter strains. To commercially produce inoculants of free nitrogen-fixing bacteria, it is necessary to select a suitable inoculum carrier. Since sugar beet seed produced in our country is regularly pelleted, it has been thought to improve sugar beet seed processing by adding the inoculum of selected Azotobacter chroococcum strains to the pelleting mass. To accomplish that, it was necessary to examine the reaction of various Azotobacter chroococcum strains to the pelleting mass which comprises 8-10 chemical components that protect sugar beet seeds against diseases and pests. The investigation showed that the tested strains differed in growth rate when added to pelleted sugar beet seeds. Good growth was registered with four strains, slower growth was registered with six strains, while the growth of three strains was inhibited.
