Cryptogams should be integrated in nature management since they are important and indicative ecosystem components
1998
Hoffmann, M. (Instituut voor Natuurbehoud, Brussel (Belgium))
This statement was induced by the fact that nature conservation and management seems to be strongly focused on a limited number of taxonomic groups containing large, beautiful and/or peculiar species, while representatives of less spectacular groups like cryptogams often seem to be considered less important. According to several Red Data Lists cryptogams appear to be strongly threatened. The importance of cryptogams as ecosystem components is illustrated. The indicator role of these organisms for the evaluation of the environmental quality of the ecosystem is strongly emphasized.
