Species affiliations and protein A production were studied of 185 staphylococcal strains isolated from collective raw milk specimens and milk from goats with mastitis. Results indicate that S. aureus subsp. aureus is highly widespread in collective raw milk (38,2%) and particularly in milk from goats with mastitis (65,4%). Production of protein A was established in 54,7% of S. aureus subsp. aureus strains. The staphylococcal strains isolated from goats suffering from mastitis dominated in 51% of protein A producing strains. No production of protein A was found in both the coagulase positive S. hyicus and S. intermedius and the coagulasenegative staphylococci. Protei A byosynthesis is influenced by nutritive media, temperature regimen and duration of culturing. Active protein A production was observed on agar supplemented with 5% sheep blood at 41 degree C for 24 h.
