Heavy metals in the soil-plant system in the case of application of composts of waste water sediments

The compost made from waste sediments of Tallinn Waste Water Treatment Plant and peat contains heavy metals in relatively small amounts. The influence of such compost to soil and plant was poor. On the average of 17 trials with composts the concentration of heavy metals increased in the soil as following: Cd - 0,006; Cr - 0,44; Hg - 0,003; Ni - 0,096 mg kg (-1). The concentration of Cd, Cr, Hg and Pb increased and the concentration of Ni decreased 0,005 mg kg (-1). The compost made from waste water sediments did not increase the concentration of heavy metals in the soils and plants and may be used as a fertilizer
