Norway spruce in experimental plantations: comparison of progenies of plus trees and the bulk seed lot
2000
Pihu, R. | Moels, T. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Inst. of Forest Management)
Growth of the Norway spruce originating from Estonia was investigated in four experimental plantations: progenies of plus trees and random trees were compared with the progeny of the bulk seed lot originating from the Voru county. Progenies of the bulk seed lot and different plus trees grew in every plantation while progenies of random trees were present only in two plantations. Height, diameter at breast height, crown diameter and last year increment in height were measured on trees. Covariation analysis of the SAS package was used for analysis . Since variables had no normal distribution, integral characteristics were used to characterise the whole plot. Surprisingly, progenies of the mixture of several plus trees had the largest values in all investigated variables, while the progeny of single plus trees had the smallest values. Progenies of the bulk seed lot and random trees had intermediate and mutually very close values
