Role of endotoxins in pathological processes induced by Escherichia coli
1998
Bertok, L.
The so-called enteropathogenic E. coli strains isolated from the coli diarrhoea of calves in Hungary were first classified by Aldassy in 1956. It was later demonstrated that the enteropathogenic properties of E. coli strains depend on enterotoxins and adhesive antigens. However, it is well-known that all E. coli and other Gram-negative bacteria have a special cell wall component: the lipopolysaccharid endotoxin. Under experimental conditions, endotoxins are capable of inducing pathological changes only when administrated parenterally.
