Boughton, T. (Christmas Island Phosphate) | Agustono, R.
Indonesian farmers and plantation operators buy fertilizer to ensure that their crops are productive. Fertilizer marketers must help agricultural producers with their efforts in the field. When fertilizer customers select fertilizer they balance factors such as price, payment conditions ready stock availability, consistency of quality, packaging, agronomic effectiveness, ease os application and freedom from contamination. Currently, price seems to be more important than quality or effectiveness in the field. Christmas Island Phosphates is a company that markets CIRP (Christmas Island Rock Phosphate) which has characteristic that make it a very useful fertilizer on acid agricultural soils and in plantation areas. Understanding about measurement of quality and field performance is very important for customers using fertilizers in the field. Although other rock phosphates give better results in shot-term pot experiments and laboratory analysis, in the long-term field situation, CIRP gives the same yield as other reactive rock phosphates. To make a good decision when purchasing fertilizer, agricultural producers must obtain correct information about the field performance of fertilizers. Policy makers can also assist consumers by developing quality standards that identify fertilizer characteristics that are required for a fertilizer to be effective in the field (agronomic effectiveness)
