[Study on Zingiberaceae vegetation in several river basins at Purwokerto, Central Java (Indonesia)]

A study to find new sources of Zingiberaceae around Purwokerto has been conducted from January to June 1998. This study is aimed to find out the changes of species and its frequencies after seven year periods and to find out factors affecting the changes and the use of the plants. The method used was randomized survey with 2 x 2 squares, established in the riverbanks of river Jengok, Banjaran, Kranji and Pelus. In each plot, the species and its frequencies of Zingiberaceae was recorded. The data were analysed by using Model II Analysis of Variance. The result of this research showed that the number of species and its frequencies of Zingiberaceae tend to increase in the north part of Purwokerto. The number of species tends to decrease in the centre of the city. The main cause of the increase of species number and frequencies was the increase of fields used to cultivate the species, around the riverbanks. While the decrease was caused by the damage habitat due to its use for settlements
