[Effect of planting timing and agrofilm cover on head lettuce yield and quality]
1999
Staugaitis, G. | Starkute, R. (Lithuanian Inst. of Horticulture, Babtai (Lithuania))
In 1996-1998 yield and quality of head lettuce was investigated in different growing seasons : transplants were planted in May, July and August. Depending on planting time and variety, vegetation of field head lettuce proceeded 36-70 days after transplanting. When head lettuce was grown for autumn harvesting the period of plant growth after transplanting became longer 1/3 or more. The highest yield of head lettuce was obtained during cultivation in the first half of summer, a little lower - in mid-summer and lowest - in autumn. In spring agrofilm cover exercised no or negative effect on head lettuce. Mid-summer lettuce had higher level of sugars but less of vitamin C. Higher nitrate levels were established in letuce, which was grown in autumn.
