Winterhardiness and spring frost hardiness of black currant cultivars and hybrids
2000

Black currant (Ribes spp.) has a high potential yield, but it is limited by several factors. Low temperatures at flowering time, winter frost damage of flower buds, and premature fruit drop cause the most important losses. The work was carried out at State Dobele Horticultural Plant Breeding Experimental Station (Latvia) in 1999. The seventy one accession from black currant collection were evaluated for the following indications: winterhardiness; time of bud break; flowering season (time of first blooms); duration of the flowering; spring frost hardiness. These indications were compared with the obtained yield. The correlation between the indications was calculated.
