1999
Skards, I. | Strazdina, V. (University of Latvia, Riga (Latvia))
In the given work the authors investigated the inter-relation between the quality of roads and other conditions influencing the development of tourism and society in Latvia. The ratio of the second grade road length to that of the first grade roads has been chosen as an independent variable. As a dependent variable the following indices have been used: birth rate, infant and adult mortality rates, unemployment, soil fertility, education, availability of hotels. The investigation results show that the ratio of the second grade roads to the first grade roads can be used to characterize the living conditions. They were found to be unfavourable. The following conclusion has been drawn: for the successful development of tourism in Latvia the quality of its roads must be essentially improved.
